Auf dem Campingplatz läuft eine kleine Herde Ziegen rum, gestern Abend hatte jemand die Idee diese mit Brot zu füttern. Fataler Fehler, im Nu waren wir umzingelt von Ziegen, die Stühle, Grill, Ellenbogen anknabberten. Die einzige Lösung, der Schuldige mußte mit Brot in die andere Ecke des Platzes flüchten, die Ziegen hinterher. Später kam noch eine Katze, die natürlich vom Hähnchen und der Leberwurst abgekriegt hat. Die Ziegen sind blöd, sind heute morgen nicht mehr aufgetaucht, dafür haben wir jetzt 5 Katzen.

There is a small flock of Goat on the Campground, and some stupid had the brilliant idea to feed them with bread. Fatal error, moments later we are surrounded by Goats and the try to eat Chairs, the BBQ, arms and everything else. Only solution, the culprit had to run with more bread to the opposite side of the Campground, the Goats in hot pursuit. later we had a visit from a cat, she got some of the Chicken and Liverpate of course. Goats are stupid, none to be seen this morning, but we have 5 cats sitting arround.

Das schmeckt gar nicht nach Leberwurst und ist auch viel härter, na egal, vielleicht muß man nur die Schale knacken. Aua.

That does not taste for Liverpate and is a lot harder, who cares. Maybe i just have to crack the shell. Autsch.

Dann gehts für 40km in die Pampa, die Strasse ist aber ganz okay. Das CCF is ebenfalls eine Non Profit Organisation, die versucht die wild lebenden Geparden vor den Farmern zu schützen. Man setzt hier massiv auf große Hütehunde, mit dem Effekt, dass die Verluste an Lifestock um 80 % zurückgehen. Dadurch lernen die Farmer die Geparden zu tolerieren, da Sie eh keine Gefahr darstellen. Die Abschüsse gehen auch deutlich zurück, nur noch 300 pro Jahr, das sind dann nur noch 10% der Population, immer noch viel zu hoch. Das andere Problem aber ist, durch den Bevölkerungsdruck werden immer mehr Farmen aufgebaut und das verfügbare Gelände für Wildtiere und Geparden und Leoparden wird immer kleiner. Der Mensch frißt sich krank mit Rindfleisch und krepiert am Herzinfarkt, aber leider erst nachdem er die Natur zerstört hat. Das ist völlig bekloppt. Das hört wohl erst auf wenn wir uns alle totgefressen haben.

Then we drive for 40km into the Bush, but the road is quite okay. The CCF is also a non profit organisation, they try to save the wild Cheetah from the Farmers. The use huge Guarddogs with the effct that losses of lifestock decline by 80%. This encourage the Farmers to accept the Cheetah, as the pose no risk to humans anyway. The kills decline, only 300 per year which is only 10% of the total population, still way to much. The other Problem however, due to the increasing population more and more farms are build and the available land for wild animals and Cheetahs gets smaller and smaller. Humans eat themself to death by consuming huge amounts of beef, but only after we destroy the Land by producing the beef. This is just totally nuts. This will only stop when we all eat ourself to death.

Sie haben insgesamt 44 Geparden, von denen 14 hier im Center leben. das sind Tiere deren Mütter abgeknallt wurden und die keine Ahnung haben was sie jagen können. Die würden auch einen Löwen versuchen zu jagen mit vorhersehbaren Folgen, daher kann man sie leider nicht mehr freilassen, die würden es nicht überleben.

They have 44 Cheetahs, of which 14 live here in the Center. These are orphans, whose mother have been killed by bloody Farmers and therefore they never learned what to hunt. They would even try to hunt a Lion, where the outcome is to be expected. Therefore they cannot be released, they would not survive.

Noch sind die alle tiefenentspannt, aber um 14:00 gibts Futter, dann geht der Punk ab.

They are all very relaxed now, but at 2pm, there is feeding time and then it gets bussy.

Jeder bekommt pro Tag etwa 5 Kg, Pferd oder Esel, die fressen kein Wild mehr. Zusätze garatieren das sie alles bekommen wassSie brauchen und am Sontag wird gefastet.

Each gets approx 2Kg per day, Donkey or Horsemeat, they do no eat wild meat any more. Added are some supplements to make sure they get what they need and there is no food on Sundays.

Das Fleisch kommt in die Gehege, der Pfleger haut schnell ab und dann gehts rund. Die rasen ins Gehege, schnappen sich ein Stück und suchen dann einen leeren Napf, bis auf die hier. Geparden mögen kein beschmutzes Fleisch.

The maets gets into the pen, the carettaker gets out and then the run starts. Each one races inside, snaps a piece and looks for an empty bowl, except this one here. They dont like dirty meat.

Das sind zwar die kleinsten Großkatzen, aber auch diese schaffen schon ganz schön dicke Knochen. Ich würde nicht versuchen den Katzen was abzunehmen.

These are the smallest of the big cats, but even they can crack quite big bones, i would not get the idea to pinch something from them.

Nach eienr Stunde ist die Fütterung rum und wir fahren zuerst zurück, kaufen dann ein bißchen ein und fahren noch 80km bis nach Outjo. Von hier sind es nur noch 60km bis zum Etosha NP. Am Abend machen wir mal eine Grobplanung über unser Restprogramm und stellen entsetzt fest, wir haben nicht genug Zeit. Also werden wir uns ab jetzt wieder beeilen müssen.

After one hour nothing is left and we get back, go a bit shopping and then drive the 80k to Outjo. From here we have only 60km to go. We use the evening to check on our Restprogram and realize that we do not have enough time left. From now on we need to speed up again.

Pünktlich um 10.00 stehen wir am Gate von Africat, einer Non Profit Organisation zur Erhaltung von Geparden und Leoparden. Die Tour dauert 2 Stunden und ist nicht wirklich billig, aber für einen guten Zweck. Zuerst aber müssen wir noch 25km Schotterstrasse fahren.

On time at 10am, we are at the gate of Africat, a non profit organistaion to protect African cats, specially Cheetahs and Leopards. The tour takes two hours and is not really cheap, but its for a good cause. But first we have to drive 25km on gravel to get there.

Das Gelände ist 20.000 Hektar groß, das ist für Europa ziemlich unvorstellbar.

The area is 20.000 hectare, this is unthinkable for Europe.

Es laufen hier einige Leoparden und Wildhunde rum, die ausgewildert werden sollen, wir sehen aber keine, nur die Schilder.

There are some Leopards and Wild dogs running arround, who are about the get released into the real wild, but we dont see any, just the signs.

Irgendwo hinter dem Berg müßte es eigentlich sein.

Somewhere behind the hill, it is supposed to be there.

Die Tour fängt an mit einem Besuch der Klinik, da gibts auch Löwen, allerdings ziemlich kleine. Die haben schon alles dran, auch die Krallen.

The Tour starts with a visit to the Clinic, where they have some Lions, albeit very small ones. But everything is developed on those, also the claws.

Dann endlich geht es ins Gelände, in einem großen Bereich haben Sie 4 Geparden, die auf die Auswilderung warten.

Then we are out into the Bush, in a large enclosure they have 4 Cheetahs, who wait to be released into the wild.

Das is Quattro, der größte von den vieren. Die anderen heißen, Sniper, Hurricane und Spitfire. Ich frage unseren Guide wo Messerschmidt ist.

Da kommt gerade Sniper und schaut sich uns aus der Nähe an, die anderen gucken nur entspannt zu.

Dann wäscht er sich wie eine kleine Miezekatze.

Unser Guide holt sich noch schnell was zu Mittag, die Pilze sind wirklich riessig.

Nach 2 Stunden sind wir zurück und trinken noch was. Dann gehts langsam zurück zur Strasse, mittlerweile ist der Dschungel aufgewacht und wir bekommen einiges zu sehen, wie z.b. diverse Orix Antilopen.

After 2 hours we are back and have a drink. Then we make our way back to the road, meanwhile the Dscungel has woken up and we get to see something, like tis Orix.

Und auch 2 Giraffen liegen am Strassenrand.

Also two Girafes wait on the edge of the road.

Die eine schaut sich unsere Scheibe an und scheint mit dem Kopf zu schütteln.

The other one looks at our windscreen and shakes her head.

Während die andere langsam aufsteht, da ist ja sogar Babsi schneller aus dem Bett, gut die Beine sind auch kürzer.

So ein Schild haben wir bislang noch nicht gesehen. Es gibt hier auch ein Geierzentrum, anderswo Finanzamt genannt.

We have not see such a sign before, there is a Vulture Center here as well. Elsewhere they call that Inland Revenue.

Nach 4 Tagen und endlosen Abschiedsszenen fahren wir dann mal wieder, diesmal nach Norden in Richtung Etosha. Die Berichte von da rangieren von wenig Tieren bis gar keine. Es ist Regenzeit, da oben ist es grün und die Tiere finden massenhaft Verstecke. Ausserden soll es dort oben kürzlich aufgrund der bisherigen Trockenzeit Abschüsse gegeben haben. Wir werden sehen.

After 4 days and endlos scenes of Byebye we are finaly on road again, this time up north in direction of Etosha. The news from there ranges from few animals to no animals at all. It is rainy season and its green up there, so they find loads of hideouts. Also we heard that they killed a lot of animals as part of a drought relief. We will see.

Für die Africat Foundation sind wir zu spät und deren Zeltplatz ist uns zu teuer, 10km weiter finden in Otjima Camp eine gute und günstige Alternative.

We are too late for the Africat Foundation and there Campground is too expensive. 10k further north we find a good and cheap alternative at Otjiwa Camp.

Am Morgen weden erst mal die Strausse geärgert, schade das ein Zaun da ist.

First thing in the morning is to tease the Austrish.

Die 200km sind schnell erledigt, es gibt auch nicht viel zu sehen.

The 200km are no match, but there is not that much too see.

Genau unter der Gewitterwolke liegt Windhoek. Wir campen ziemlich in der Mitte, neben Jos Beerpub und sind früh genug um noch einzukaufen. Am Abend gehen wir in Joe Kneipe.

Direct below the cloud is Windhoek. We camp pretty much in the middle of town next to Joes Beerpub, and we are early enough to go shopping. In the evening we have dinner at Joes Pub.

Das Museum in Windhoek, wir fahren am Samstag und Sontag in den großen Spar und kaufen mächtig ein, alles voller guter Sachen die wir gut kennen und sogar teilweise deutsche Bedienung.

This is the Museum in Windhoek. We go shoping on Saturday and Sunday and we get all the goos stuff, partly with german speaking service.

An der Kirche können wir gut parken und laufen von da in die Stadt.

We park at the Church and walk from there in town.

Am Samstag abend machen wir eine kleine sehr lustige Grillparty, fast alles Deutsche ausser zwei Engländern.

Saturday night is bbq party and it is very funny, mainly Germans except two Poms.

Da wir nicht alles essen können am Samstag, machen wir das am Sontag gerade nochmal.

As we cant eat all, we repeat the Party on Sunday as well.

Unser Stellplatz in Ghanzi, wir wollten eigentlich nur einen Tag bleiben, aber das Wetter ist grandios und der Pool cool. Die Lodge wo wir den zweiten Tag verbringen wollen ist im Busch und die Zufahrt ist grenzwertig, die angeblichen Tiere verstecken sich im Busch wegen der Hitze und Sie haben nur 2 Löwen im Käfig, einen davon sehen wir. Also fahren wir wieder zurück zum Pool und vergammeln den Tag, herrlich.

This is our place in Ghanzi, we just wanted to stay one day, but the weather is brilliant and the Pool is cool. The Lodge where we wanted to stay the second day is in the middle of the bush, and the road is on the edge. The animals hide in the Bush because it is too hot and they have just two Lions in a enclousure, one of them we did manage to see, therefore we get back to our place on the Pool and watse the whole day there, excellent.

Die Kalahari ist sehr trocken, aber dieser Pool macht alles wieder wett. Es hat ca 35 Grad, kaum Wind, keine anderen Gäste, also ist er ganz für uns allein.

The Kalahari is a very dry place, but not this Pool. Its been 35 degree outside and no wind, no other guests, so he is just for us.

Das Leben ist nicht sooo schlecht, und das Beste, keine Spur von Greenpeace.

Life is good, and no Greenpeace to be seen.

Donnerstag morgen aber ist Schluß mit gammeln, wir fahren zur Grenze, die Strasse ist ziemlich gerade und nicht sehr aufregend. Wir freuen uns schon auf die Diskussionen wie schwer die Zicke denn nun ist, aber es geht alles ziemlich flott ohne irgendwelchen Ärger.

Thursday morning and the good life is over, we are back on the road to the Border, and the road is very straight and not too exciting. We look forward to the discussions coming up about the weight of the Bitch, but nothing of that nonsense, very quick sailing and we are back in Namibia.

Das ist der Blick in die Ebene südlich von Gobabis, hier bin ich letztes Jahr drübergeflogen.

Dann sehe ich im letzten Moment irgendwas auf der Strasse und schaffe es noch auszuweichen, dann zurück um zu sehen was das war. Das Chamelion stürzt sich direkt auf mich und will mich wohl auffressen, es hat sich damit aber ein wenig übernommen.

I see something on the road and i just manage to avoid to run over it, then we drive back to check what that was. The Chamelion jumps on me and apparently wants to eat me, but that is a huge task for the little guy.

Das kitzelt ziemlich wenn der den Arm langläuft, der ist aber auch wirklich niedlich.

It tickels quite a bit when he runs along your arm, but he is really cute.

Vielleicht paßt die ja besser in den Mund, ist ja schon kleiner.

Die Nase past jedenfalls. Wir setzen Ihn dann sicher neben der Strasse ab, wir sind nicht sicher ob die Truckies auch einen Bogen machen würden.

The nose fits into the mouth, perfect. We drop him safely next to the road, not sure if the truckies will try to avoid to run him over.

Über Gobabis wirds jetzt ziemlich dunkel und wir sehen die Blitze vor uns einschlagen, Regen gibt es aber trotzdem kaum.

It is getting dark above Gobabis and we see the lighning hit the ground. But no much rain.

Typische Tracht in Namibia, das werden wir noch öfter sehen. Wir kaufen ein und sind positiv überrascht was es alles gibt. Heute gibts noch mal was gesundes, Gehacktes mit Gemüse.

Das ist unser Stellplatz, direkt neben einem Wildgehege. Während des eincheckens sehen wir wie jemand Rippchen auf den Tisch bekommt, Scheiß auf Gesund, das gibts bei uns heute auch.

Wir müssen heute nur 200km fahren, also keine Eile. Wir haben uns entschlossen nicht über die Fähre zu fahren, sondern weiter und dann über die Zambesibrücke nach Namibia. Dort soll die Versorgung sehr gut sein, Supermärkte, Metzger, Tankstelle und ein schöner Zeltplatz am Sambesi. Auch entgehen wir dem leicht bekloppten Grenzübergang, steht alles so im Reiseführer. Man sollte halt nicht immer alles glauben.

Bis zur Fähre ist die Strasse gut, danach wird es die schlechteste geteerte Strasse die wir bis jetzt gefahren sind. Schlagloch an Schlagloch, und ich fahre Slalom.

We just need to go 200km today, so no rush. We decided to skip the Ferry and go further along over the Bridge to Namibia. There it has Supermarkets, a Butcher and cheap wines and a nice Campground at the Zambesi. And we will miss the slight crazy Border post at the Ferry. This is whats written in our Travelguide, you should not believe everything thats written somewhere.

Up to the Ferry is the road okay, from there on its the worst sealed road we have traveled so far, Pothole next to Pothole and i drive Slalom.

Die Schilder sagen uns, dass die Strasse von Zambia Strassenamt gewartet wird und ein Blick nach draussen bestätigt das, der Busch hat sie fast verschluckt.

The signs tell us that the road is maintains by Zambia Road Authority, the view outside tells us that this is true. The bush has nearly closed the road.

Manche von denen sind Knietief, man sieht die gut weil sich Wege drumherum gebildet haben. Manche sieht man aber nicht gut, und ich muß mehrere Vollbremsungen machen. Wir sprechen später mit einen Lkw Fahrer, der hat hier  eine Achse vom Anhänger verloren, nachts im Regen kann man die Löcher nicht mehr sehen.

Some of them are kneedeep, but you usually can see them pretty good because there are ways arround them. Some you cant see and i do some emergy breakings. We talk to a truckie later and he tells us he recently lost an axle of is trailer, in the night and rain you can see anything.

Irgenwann erreichen wir doch noch die Brücke und suchen den Grenzübergang, der ist schön versteckt. Die sambische Seite ist ratzfatz erledigt, und wir denken wir kommen jetzt in das best organisierteste Land Afrikas, was kann da schon schiefgehen. Die Zöllner sind obermuffig, würdigen uns keines Blickes, aber Pass und Carnet gehen recht flott, dann müssen wir Road Tax bezahlen. Das bezahlt man  jedes Mal wenn man einreist, auch wenn man nur einen Tag bleibt wie wir, und die Höhe hängt vom Auto ab. Der Typ macht erstmal in Ruhe seine SMS fertg und würdigt uns keines Blickes. Dann beginnt die Diskussion übers Gewicht. Ich hatte dazu extra den Zettel von der Sepditions an der Scheibe gelassen, weil da 3020 Kilo eingetragen ist, aber Babsi mag sowas nicht und ich konnte Sie vor langer Zeit gerade noch davon abhalten den Zettel abzureisen, aber er hatte ein Eselsohr. War alles okay, aber die Paviane gestern haben ihn dann wohl endgültig abgerissen, auf alle Fälle ist er weg. Wir finden aber im Carnet noch die gleiche Angabe, den Fahrzeigschein zeige ich ihm aber nicht, da stehen nähmlich die 4 Tonnen drin. Er will uns aber trotzdem 440 Rand abzocken weil es ein kommerzielles Lieferfahrzeug sein soll, natürlich protestieren wir lautstark. Dann geht er weg und bearbeitet andere und läßt uns erst mal stehen. Babsi ist kurz davor in seine Kabine zu springen und schnauzt ihn an was das soll, da erklärt er, dass sein Computer hängt und das System geblockt ist. Ein Trucker neben uns der auch wartet, sagt uns das wir auch in der Stadt bezahlen können, und fragt uns alles Ernstes warum wir ausgerechnet hierhin kommen um Urlaub zu machen, wir kommen nicht umhin zuzugeben, dass die Frage berechtigt ist. Er macht das 3x im Monat und zahlt jedes Mal 2000 Rand und wartet dann eine Woche um nach Sambia zu kommen, völlig bekloppt. Wir düsen in die Stadt, nicht ohne weitere Inspektion der Zicke und unser Bild von Namibia hat den ersten dicken Kratzer. An der Tankstelle ist die Zahlstelle, aber niemand ist da. Sie versuchen die Lady zu erreichen, das klappt auch und auf einmal ist sie da. Zum Glück gehts dann flott, keine Nachfragen und wir fahren zum Pick + Pay. Sieht modern aus, ist aber so gut wie nichts drin, ausser Gehacktes gibts kein Fleisch, also keine Filletsteaks heute. Wir versuchen es noch im Shopright, aber da ist es noch schlechter, die Kühlung ist ausgefallen und es stinkt in dem Laden wie auf der Müllkippe in Lusaka.

At some point we reach the bridge and search for the borderpost, which is well hidden. The Zambian side is done in no time, and we reach the best organised Country in Africa, what could go wrong. The officers are totally desinterested and dont even look at us, but we get the Stamps and the Carnet done. Then we have to pay Road Tax, which you pay everytime you enter, even for one day and the amont depents on the car. The officer finished his Sms in no rush and does not spare even a view at us. Then the discussion begins about the weight. For those occasions i left a sticker of the Rollon Ferry on the windscreen, because it states the weight of 3020Kg there. After we arrived in PE, i was just able to stop Babsi from ripping it off because its not clean, but there was a edge detached and hanging loose. And the Baboons yesterday finished the job and ripped it off. Fortunatly the weight is also given in the Carnet, i am not showing him the car papers because there is says 4 tons. But he still wants 440 Rand, because it would be a commercial delivery vehicle, of course we protest heavily and noisy. He then just goes away and works somewhere else and let us stay there. Before Babsi jumps into his cubicle, she aks what the fuck is going on, and he tells us that his system is down. A truckie next to us tells us we can also pay in town, and he asks us in all honesty, why we come to such a place for Holiday, and we have to admit this is a good questions. He does that 3 times a month, pays 2000 Rand and then waits for a week to get into Zambia, totaly crazy. We leave for the town but get inspected first and our rody picture of Namibia gets the first big cracks. In town, the Lady is not there and the guys at the Petrilstation try to reach here. All of a sudden she is back and then its quick, no more funny questions and we drive to Pick + Pay, which looks quite modern. But there is nothing inside, no meat at all, only minced the have nothing, so no fillet tonight. We try in the Shopright but thats even worse, the cooling is out and the lac stinks like the tip in Lusaka.

Das einzige was stimmt ist der Campingplatz, direkt am Zambesi gelegen, Wir hören und sehen Hippos und essen im Restaurant. Namibia hat noch viel Platz für Verbesserungen.

The only thing which is spot on is the Campground, direct at the Zambesi and we have dinner in the Restaurant. Namibia has a lot of room for improvement.
